Urine an alternative to water?

Let's all find out if urine is safe enough to drink when water is scarce. An article "The Yellow Liquid Diet : Is it a good idea to drink urine when water is scarce?" written by Chris Wilson... An extra day or two, at best. A healthy person's urine is about 95 percent water and sterile, so in the short term it's safe to drink and does replenish lost water. But the other 5 percent of urine comprises a diverse collection of waste products, including nitrogen, potassium, and calcium—and too much of these can cause problems. When you drink your own pee, all the stuff that your kidneys had attempted to excrete comes right back into your stomach, and much of it ends up back in your kidneys. After several days of this, your urine will become highly concentrated with dangerous waste products, and drinking it can cause symptoms similar to those brought on by total kidney failure. At that point, you're doomed either way—from dehydration on the one hand or renal meltdown

Black Friday shopping

Hmn...you might be thinking that it's the Black Friday during Holy Week. No, no, no folks! I am referring to the Black Friday that falls a day after Thanksgiving. What comes in your mind after Thanksgiving? Mine is Christmas and the gifts that I will be receiving and of course, gifts for our love ones. Stores are busy during that time of the year. We'll have all the stress in the world going to different stores to another to get the perfect gifts. Along with that, stores are so crowded and that we couldn't park our cars on the closer area. Also, there would be lots of shoppers flocking around with the same goals with ours --- to shop. Isn't it too hassle? Instead of going out for shopping, why not stay home, face the computer, browse websites and start shopping. But, wait up! We need updates from our favorite stores. I can help you with this. I recommend www.black-friday.net for you to browse. This website is updated with black friday ads of hundreds of s

Smoking causes ear infection in kids

A new report from Perth's Telethon Institute for Child Health Research has found a strong link between childhood ear infections and exposure to tobacco smoke. The families of 100 Aboriginal children and 180 non-Aboriginal children participated in the Kalgoorlie Otitis Media Research Project, allowing the collection of social, demographic, environmental and biological data to investigate the causes of otitis media (middle ear infections). The children had regular ear examinations from birth until 2 years of age. Chief Investigator Dr Deborah Lehmann, who heads the Institute's infectious diseases research, said ear infections were the most common reason that young children see a doctor and can cause life-long problems. "Up to 20 per cent of children have more than three ear infections between 1 and 2 years of age. If their hearing is damaged, it can seriously affect their educational outcomes and social circumstances in adulthood," Dr Lehmann said. Read full article her

Higher asthma and allergy rates for first born babies

Reading a lot of articles from Sciencedaily.com feeds my mind with vast of information especially about pregnancy. I do love this though. I do agree with the study conducted in the Isle of Wight in the United Kingdom pertaining to the risk the first born baby will have. If you wanna know why, just read this article. First-born Babies' Higher Asthma And Allergy Rates Due To Pregnancy Conditions ScienceDaily (May 21, 2008) First-born children are at higher risk of developing asthma and allergy because of different conditions they experience in the uterus, according to new research from the Isle of Wight in the United Kingdom, which will be presented at the American Thoracic Society's 2008 International Conference in Toronto on May 21. In order to determine whether the higher risk of asthma and allergy in first-born children is the result of a prenatal process of post-natal factors, researchers investigated whether birth order affected several immune markers that are set at

Breastfeeding raises children's IQ

"Natural is the best". A mother's milk is full of nutrition for the baby. It has all the natural goodness that a formula can't provide. I always say that I will be breastfeeding my baby. Now I am more inspired with the article I just read that breastfeeding raises children's IQ as well as improves academic performance. Of course, I am not forgetting the relevance of genetics. Children acquire intelligence from the parents and basic needs are just the secondary factors. Anyway, let's just read this article. Breastfeeding Associated With Increased Intelligence, Study Suggests ScienceDaily (May 6, 2008) The largest randomized study of breastfeeding ever conducted reports that breastfeeding raises children's IQs and improves their academic performance, a McGill researcher and his team have found. In a new article, Dr. Michael Kramer reports the results from following the same group of 14,000 children for 6.5 years. "Our study provides the strongest evi

Asthma and allergy during childhood : possible effect of C section delivery

So many studies have been conducted and some were proven. But whether it's true or not, it's better to be aware. Just read this article about the possible effect of C-section delivery for babies when they reached childhood stage. Let's read. Possible Biological Explanation For C-Section-linked Allergies And Asthma Found ScienceDaily (May 23, 2008) Scientists believe they may have identified a biological explanation for the link between cesarean-section delivery and risk of allergy and asthma in childhood. Baby for sale : 1 euro

As a soon-to-be-mom and as a human as well, my heart cries everytime I hear or read news about juvenile abuse. Just this morning, I came across this article about a couple selling their baby on ebay for 1 euro. How could they? Is that how cheap they think of a baby's life would cost? I can't even imagine hurting my own child or any living creatures. Baby's mom said it was a joke but then it's still an abuse in a latter sense. Anyway, just read the article. Here's an excerpt... Authorities in southern Germany have taken custody of a 7-month-old boy after his parents posted an ad on eBay offering to sell him for one euro, or about $1.60. Read full story here .

A quick update

We just got home from the hospital to see mine and Dannielle's OB. So far, all went well. Dannielle is doing great according to her heartbeat. I didn't gain weight though due to the strict diet they put me into. There's nothing to worry anyway. Dr. Feigley said it's really normal. My blood pressure is fine as well as well as my tummy's measurement. We'll be back again in the next two weeks and that would be the last. After that, our appointment will fall every week til the time comes. This means it's really close. July 14 is coming...

Mothers with High Normal Blood Sugar Levels Place Infants At Risk For Birth Problems

This info freaks me out. As I've said here, my blood sugar ain't normal and if not taken care of, there's a tendency that my baby will be affected. Here's an excerpt from the article I just read. Pregnant women with blood sugar levels in the higher range of normal --- but not high enough to be considered diabetes -- -are more likely than women with lower blood sugar levels to give birth to babies at risk for many of the same problems seen in babies born to women with diabetes during pregnancy, according to a study funded in large part by the National Institutes of Health. These problems included a greater likelihood for Caesarean delivery and an abnormally large body size at birth. Infants born to women with higher blood sugar levels were also at risk for shoulder dystocia, a condition occurring during birth, in which an infant's shoulder becomes lodged inside the mother's body, effectively halting the birth process. The study authors declined to make recommenda

Drinking Tap Water During Pregnancy Does Not Affect Unborn Fetus

I really thought before that drinking water directly from the faucet or tap water would really harm my baby in me. For that reason, I bugged my husband to get me a purifier. Just now, while creating some entries as my interim posts for the succeeding days, I browsed the info below which will put me shame once hubby reads this (hope not! lol). According to a study in the November issue of the American Journal of Epidemiology (available online September 5), a team of researchers at the University of North Carolina School of Public Health headed by David A. Savitz, Ph.D., Director of the Center of Excellence in Epidemiology, Biostatistics, and Disease Prevention at MSSM, and formerly Chair of the Department of Epidemiology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, have determined that drinking water DBPs -- in the range commonly encountered in the US -- do not affect fetal survival. This finding is particularly important because previous research has suggested that exposure

Prenatal Exposure To Drugs, Alcohol And Tobacco Affect infant's Brain to Early Adolescence

Image
Til now, I can't seem to grasp why there are individuals who are nicotine dependents despite of the large campaign about it's effect to the human body and the environment. I know it's not my own business but as a human as well and a dweller of this planet, smokes does affect me and my baby. See the difference between two fetus' brains. Equivalent brain slices from two study subjects of the same sex and age. The image on the reader's left is from a subject who was exposed to alcohol, cigarettes, cocaine and marijuana during the prenatal period while the image on right is from a control subject who had none of these prenatal exposures. Note that the cortical gray matter appears thinner in the subject with pre-natal exposures than is found in the control subject (see black arrowheads). In addition, the subcortical gray matter appears fuller and more robust in the control subject (B., arrows) than in the subject with the four pre-natal exposures (A., arrows)

Constipation and pregnancy

I was really bothered by this before. The first time it happened was arduous. But as my bump gets bigger, constipation isn't too bad compared to what I experienced before. Constipation is very common among pregnant women. It is caused by too much worry, anxiety, minimal physical exercise, and a low-fiber diet. Here are the few things that may help prevent the occurrence of constipation and it's treatment if you are experiencing it now : Eat a high fiber diet : Ideally, you will consume 25 to 30 grams per day of dietary fiber from fruits, vegetables, breakfast cereals, whole grain breads, prunes and bran. Drink a lot of fluids: Drinking plenty of fluids is important, particularly with your increase of fiber. Drink 10 to 12 cups of fluids each day. It is the combination of a high fiber diet and lots of liquid that best help you eliminate your waste. Sweat, hot/humid climates, and exercise may increase your need for additional fluids. Exercise routinely : If you are inactive,

What to wear during pregnancy

As our body changes, our needs change, too. As our bumps get bigger and bigger, our wardrobe needs to be changed, too. What do we really have to wear while we're pregnant? Here are some ideas which may help us in choosing our wardrobes : Tops There’s a huge range of maternity clothes in the shops, so you’ve got plenty to choose from. It’s hard to predict how big you’ll get, but for the early stages of pregnancy you’ll probably be able to get away with your old favourites – unless they’re ultra skimpy or cropped, which isn’t the greatest pregnancy look. As your bump expands, it’s good to invest in some new clothes. If budget is an issue and you can’t warrant spending money on something you’ll only wear for a short time, check out online auction sites, as you can usually pick up some great bargains. Simply designed wrap tops are ideal for pregnancy, as they skim your bump and can be adjusted as your size changes. Specially designed maternity wear tops have cleverly designed panels

Preventing stretch marks for expecting moms

Whether we like it or not, stretch marks develop during pregnancy. Lines start to appear on our lower abdomen usually during the sixth or seventh month of pregnancy. Apart from that, stretch marks also show up on other areas of out bodies such as upper thighs, buttocks, breasts and even arms. These depend on the amount of weight we gain and genetic history. Genetics really play a huge role why some pregnant women have more stretch marks than other. Stretch marks can still be prevented or even limit it's appearance whether it's genetic or not. Here are the guidelines which really would help us : Eat a healthy, diverse and balanced diet that keeps your weight gain within the recommended range of 25 to 35 pounds. Excellent nutritional status is vital for your developing baby, but it also contributes to the strength and health of the body’s largest organ: the skin. What’s more, a controlled and steady weight gain, without any wild upward swings, will let your skin stretch at

Walking while pregnant

Eversince I got pregnant, I've always been told by my own mother and mommy friends to walk as my exercise. Afraid of giving birth, this advice is being followed by me. It is said that walking helps or ease' labor. We all know that walking is really a great exercise and this is even better for pregnant women. To support my entry, I made my own research. Walking for pregnant. It is a low-impact workout that can help keep your muscles toned as well as keep your joints and muscles around your uterus toned in order to help labor along, and help labor move faster. Here are some tips to be considered when walking : Wear Comfortable Shoes. If you know you are going to be outside walking all day, be sure that you are wearing tennis shoes that are comfortable to walk in, and not sandals, flip flops, or other shoes that offer no support. Take a Chair to Sit In. Everyone gets tired eventually while walking. While pregnant, you are likely to become tired and need a rest mu

Celebrating Mother's Day

Hubby was so thoughtful enough for greeting me "happy mother's day my love". The greetings was late as he almost forgot it (lol). He greeted me late at noon. Better late than never. Despite of that, he still brought me to a movie and a fine meal. We had a tremendous day. It was my first time to be greeted as a soon-to-be- nanay(mom) by my lovie-dovie. Exactly to what I am expecting, it feels great. I can't wait for the next Mother's day...a new celebration to be added to our calendar knowing that it's really for real, a real mama.

Mariah Careys rumored wedding is definitely real

I still can't believe that my favorite Mariah Carey really got married. Believe it or not, I'm not infavor of that. I just dunno! I like her as she was before. Single and happy. But it's her life and she can do anything she want...including marriage. Anyway, Carey and Cannon got married in Bahamas last April 30, 2008, few days after the April 25 proposal . She wore a slinky white wedding dress from Nile Cmylo, Christian Louboutin heels and a dinner napkin-like veil for the secret sunset nuptials at her sumptuous island estate. Happy Mother's day!

Image
It's the day to honor our moms --friends, our own moms and mommies who are valuable to us. I'm not a mommy yet...sooner I will be. I am delighted for I received messages from my friends and many thanks to them. Weeks ago, I sent a pretty Mother's day card to my mama in the Philippines. I hope she already have it by now. It was sent early to ensure it will arrive on time. I didn't tell anyone in the family about such surprise. I also ordered a dozen of flowers for her. For Chad's mom, we bought a card and we'll give it to her anyday now or tomorrow. I also greeted some of my friends in the Philippines thru e-mails. Simple greetings mean so much!

OB appointment again

Image
(at the clinic) Early 10 this morning, we headed ourselves to the Womens Hospital for our regular check-up. As I've said before, the monthly check-up was rescheduled twice a month and this is the first. Two weeks after, we're gonna go back again for another check-up. So far, it went well. My tummy's measurement is perfect as well as baby's heartbeat. My weight and blood pressure are fine as well. The only thing that I should give attention is my sugar intake. I have to see a dietrician for a plan on my next visit. No more too much sugary foods for me till I give birth. Poor Lira!

A year after K-1 interview

I'd like to thank my friend jackie for reminding me. It should be remembered by me but I don't keep track of the dates that much. Still, I can't believe that it's been a year and here I am, able to live here in the United States with my hubby after everything that went through with processing my VISA. I remember the sleepless night I had the night before my interview. Glad jackie was with me in the hotel room. She shared her experience and that made me kinda at ease. Anyways, though I wasn't able to remember that date, still I brought hubby to Chinese restaurant for dinner.

Am I lucky? (lol)

Image
Well, as usual, I'm here again facing my computer to catch some opportunities. Lucky enough, I caught kinda big fishes which I think is right enough as a payment for not getting much these past few days. True enough, everyday is not a lucky day in Payperpost if your pagerank is nothing but zero. I hope I could get pageranks as well while I'm still free...not giving birth yet coz when that time comes, I'm sure less opps would be given to me. Gotta go for now peeps. Have to catch more opps to fill the vacant slots.

Child rearing tips

I ain't a mom yet so I haven't really experience raising a child full time. I have had couple of students before but being a mom is way too far from that. I searched for information on how to raise my soon-to-be daughter especially if has a "character" which is very common for children nowadays. Here's what I got from the article "1 0 tips for raising children with character " written by Dr. Kevin Ryan. 1. Put parenting firs t. This is hard to do in a world with so many competing demands. Good parents consciously plan and devote time to parenting. They make developing their children’s character their top priority. 2. Review how you spend the hours and days of your week . Think about the amount of time your children spend with you. Plan how you can weave your children into your social life and knit yourself into their lives. 3. Be a good example . Face it: human beings learn primarily through modeling. In fact, you can’t avoid being an example to your chi

Safe Exercise Plan During Pregnancy

Before doing so, it's best advised to consult your doctor first to avoid any complications. This infos are excerpt from this article . It's best if you read the whole of it on the given link. Many women enjoy dancing, swimming, water aerobics, yoga, Pilates, biking, or walking. Swimming is especially appealing, as it gives you welcome buoyancy (floatability or the feeling of weightlessness). Try for a combination of cardio (aerobic), strength, and flexibility exercises, and avoid bouncing. Many experts recommend walking. It's easy to vary the pace, add hills, and add distance. If you're just starting, begin with a moderately brisk pace for a mile, 3 days a week. Add a couple of minutes every week, pick up the pa

What to take to the hospital when it's time

I am 7 months months pregnant and 2 months from now, the baby is about to come out no matter what. Being prepared is what I always wanted even before I got pregnant. Yesterday, I was thinking of what are the things to do. I'm done washing and ironing Dannielle's clothes and blankets and even put it up in her closet and drawers. I also arranged everything in her room from toys to gears. What I need to do it to prepare the things we are bringing to the hospital when the time comes. We already got it. It's just that I need to put it in a bag. Today, I was checking a list or instructions I read over the net which I definitely put in mind. Tomorrow or within this week, I will surely prepare everything including mine. Here's what I read... Packing check list Your medical records and birth plan. Cosmetics bag, including soap and shampoo. Sanitary towels. Underwear. Dressing gown and slippers. Change of clothes. Nursing bra. Medication. Camera and film for

I won!

Yesterday, I was bidding for two signatured bags on ebay . I thought I will win the first one unfortunately, I was outbid. It happened in just a single minute. Oh boy! that bidder was fast, yeah! Next time, I'll try not to let go.

Gaining weight during pregnancy affect kids

Pregnant women are advised to watch their weight to prevent any risks especially for children. I know how hard it is to deprive ourselves with the food we want but this is for our own good and for our babies as well. I admit I am hardheaded sometimes... Here's an excerpt from the article I read... The standard advice for how much weight a woman should gain during pregnancy may need to changed, concludes a rigorous and provocative study suggesting that even accepted weight gains may raise the risk of having an overweight toddler. Women in the study who gained the recommended amount of weight ran four times the risk of having a child who was overweight at age 3, compared to women who gained less than the advised amount. read full article here

I am thankful for we had a baby shower thrown by Chad's family and friends. Feels great being loved and supported by these people. The stuff that we got is really a big help to us especially the bags of diapers. If I'm not mistaken, I think it's good for months of use. We all know how expensive that thing is. With that, we'll be able to save. Also, we got clothings, toys and more. Baby Dannielle's room is so crowded now.
